Our story
My-O-My Shawarma began with two immigrant brothers from Afghanistan — both named Abdul, funny enough.
Although life took them to two different countries, their stories remained as connected as the bond they shared as brothers. After immigrating, both spent decades working hard and building new lives for their families before eventually pursuing dreams of owning businesses of their own.
One brother settled in Canada, where he went on to build a successful restaurant business with several locations throughout the Toronto area. Along the way, he saw just how much Canadians had fallen in love with the Canadian style of shawarma that has become a staple across the country.
That sparked an idea: why not bring that same style of shawarma to the Bay Area?
He teamed up with his brother in California, and together they brought the idea to life in the heart of Berkeley, just steps away from UC Berkeley.
My-O-My was built around a simple goal: serve flavorful, generously portioned food in a place where everyone feels welcome.
Today, we're incredibly grateful for the community that has formed around us. From Berkeley students to longtime local residents, our customers have made My-O-My their late-night stop, their comfort meal, and for many, their go-to shawarma spot.
We're proud of how far our family's journey has taken us — from Afghanistan, to Canada and California, and finally to My-O-My. And we're just getting started.
